Dr. Luis F Garfias

Luis F Garfias, Ph.D. Director, Testing & Qualification

Luis F. Garfias, Ph.D. is director of Testing & Qualification for DNV Columbus. Dr. Garfias holds a doctorate degree in Materials Science from Oxford University (UK), where he did Research on Corrosion and Metallurgy of Highly Alloyed Steels for offshore applications. Dr. Garfias also holds a masters degree in Corrosion Science and Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), and a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatán, Mexico. Dr. Garfias also spent two years as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the University of Minnesota, in the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Department, working in the microscopy and corrosion of biomedical implants.

Dr. Garfias was a principal scientist in Bell Labs Research for seven years where he worked in several areas of materials science, both research and engineering, including localized corrosion of highly alloyed stainless steels, degradation in biomedical materials and implants, corrosion and reliability of electronic materials and devices. In June 2003, Dr. Garfias received the "Central Bell Labs Teamwork Award for being the Chairman of the Lucent Task Force on Corrosion". In July 2004, Dr. Garfias was invited to speak at the Gordon Research Conference on Corrosion about his fundamental work related to Corrosion of Electronics and applied modeling to estimate life time to failure in electronic devices deployed in harsh environments. Following his appearance at the GRC, in October 2004, Dr. Garfias received the "2004 Most Promising Engineer with Advanced Degree," award from HENAAC (A Hispanic organization that recognizes bright Hispanic engineers across USA). Luis also spent two years in S. C. Johnson, where he worked as the Corrosion Lab leader and worked mainly on corrosion on processing equipment in industrial environments and pilot plants and corrosion on aerosol containers. In January 29, 2007, Luis received an S. C. Johnson Officer's Award for his groundbreaking work on several projects that enable the launch of multi-million dollar products, which were critical to S. C. Johnson.

Since his arrival to DNV Columbus, Dr. Garfias has been working on several projects related to highly corrosion resistant materials used in offshore and Subsea environments. Additionally, Dr. Garfias has been involved in the development of new methodologies for materials characterization and accelerated testing of coatings and linings, corrosion and protection, wear and abrasion at very high speeds to simulate down-hole corrosion (over 20,000 rpm), atmospheric corrosion and testing of electronic devices and applied novel microscopy methods. Dr. Garfias is an active member of the Electrochemical Society, Corrosion Division and serves as a Chairman for the Corrosion and Reliability of Electronics within the ECS. Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and the American Chemical Society (ACS). Luis is also a Referee for pier-reviewed International Journals (Corrosion Science, Corrosion, Journal of the Electrochemical Society, American Chemical Society and Journal of Materials).
